What changes are happening and what are the implications?

Starting on February 1st 2024, a “Deposit Return Scheme” (DRS) will be introduced in the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland customers are excluded from this programme. When buying in-scope beverages contained in a plastic bottle, aluminium or steel can, it will now feature the Re-turn logo. Glass, Tetra and HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) packaging are excluded from this programme.

A deposit of 15c or 25c will be added to each unit of sale, in addition to the standard price of the product. The DRS deposit amount is dependent on the millilitres of the product. Individual plastic bottles, aluminium or steel cans between 150ml – 500ml have a DRS deposit of 15c and Individual plastic bottles, aluminium or steel cans between 500ml – 3L have a DRS deposit of 25c. To find out more about your role in the Deposit Return Scheme and how you should handle this deposit, please visit www.re-turn.ie.

What are the Key Dates?

From February 1st 2024, DRS-compatible products will gradually replace non-DRS items across our business. Stock bearing the DRS logo will gradually replace non-DRS stock. This will be managed on a product-by-product basis. This programme applies to all customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland.

The product transition will be on a phased basis dependent on when non-DRS compatible stocks have been depleted and are no longer available from our supplier network. The final date when a non-DRS compliant product may be sold by Sysco is March 15th 2024. Business to consumer establishments have until May 31st 2024 to sell any non-DRS compatible stocks to their customers.

Please refer to the Re-Turn website for more information www.re-turn.ie.

How will this impact my Sysco Ireland Order?

DRS products will now carry the DRS logo to identify products that are compliant. We will identify these products on Sysco store and via our Contact Centre.

DRS products will be clearly identified with the associated DRS Deposit value highlighted during the checkout stage on Sysco Store and via the Sysco Contact Centre agent.

What will I see on my Sysco Invoice?

The DRS deposit will be highlighted on the customer invoice as outlined in the example below.

  1. Product descriptions will be updated to identify a DRS product and the associated DRS deposit amount.
  2. A table will identify the number of units per case with a 15c DRS deposit amount and a 25c DRS deposit amount. The Total Re-Turn Deposit amount will also be identified.
  3. The Taxable Goods value is the invoice amount less the DRS deposit amount. VAT is applied to the Taxable Goods value.
  4. The Goods Total is the Taxable Goods amount plus the Total Re-Turn Deposit amount.
  5. The Amount Payable is the Goods Total amount plus the VAT amount.

When will codes swap over from existing codes to new codes?

From February 1st 2024 we will commence the activation of DRS compliant products. To facilitate this process, we are required to create new product codes. The code changeover listing process will take place between February 1st – March 15th 2024. New product codes will be clearly identifiable on Sysco Store carrying the DRS logo. There will be no product code changes for Northern Ireland customers. Please contact your Area Sales Manager if you have any queries during this process.
